The Republic of Congo has about 23.5 Million Hectares of forest cover out of which 15 million hectares of forest is under production. These forests boast more than 300 species of timber, out of which more than 180 species are commercial traded today. These include Okoume - a premiere softwood, Sapelli, Tali, Padouk, Azobe, Okan, and many other hardwoods. The country has been a major exporter or raw logs to Asian and European countries. Every year, around 700,000 cbm of logs are exported without processing.
Recently the government has banned the export of raw logs, in order to promote local transformation and job creation. This represents a huge opportunity, given the underdeveloped timber industry sector in the country. The sustainable forestry programs ensure consistent and sustainable supply of raw materials to the industry. With a potential to increase wood transformation exports multifold, timber industries are welcome to setup transformation units in the PICP SEZ.
