Within its borders, more than 950 species of trees flourish, with 91 of them commercially traded. DRC brims with precious timber species including Afrormosia (African Teak), Wenge, Sapelli, Azobe, and Padouk that are in demand from customers all over the world, in both the European and Asian markets. The wide availability of both high-quality species for niche markets and species used in the manufacture of a wider range of timber products is one of the most important USP of the timber sector in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The primary focus areas within the timber industry are sawn wood, decking, furniture, plywood, and veneers.
Remarkably, the DRC stands as the 5th largest exporter of roundwood in Africa according to data from ITTO (2021). To optimize the distribution process, integrated logistics services will be provided from forest hubs to Special Economic Zones (SEZs), then onward to ports or markets. At CIP, we design tailor-made solutions to enable the sustainable and local transformation of logs into value added commercial products suitable for exports and local sales.
